Seed harvest in the Chinese medicinal herb plots on the research station in Mills River in 2024.
6/19/2025 – Here is a unique opportunity to work in our NC Alternative Crops & Organics Program in Mills River, NC! Shelley G. Bourdon created the Gleaton internship fund in memory of her parents, Hugh and Madge Gleaton, to interest people of Henderson County, NC in a career in farming. The Gleatons were long time Henderson County residents who were passionate about gardening and supporting farmers in their community. If you are a resident of Henderson County and are interested in becoming a farmer, extension agent, ag teacher, or working in some aspect of the agricultural industry, consider applying for this late summer internship to get some experience by working in our program.
This year the internship will focus on the research being conducted on growing Chinese medicinal herbs in western North Carolina. The intern will help harvest, clean, process, and package Chinese medicinal herbs in studies on two research stations and three farms in the area. The intern may also gain experience working with some other research projects in the program including truffles, organic tomatoes, woodland botanicals (ginseng, goldenseal, etc.), and hops. Tasks may include weeding, pruning, training, harvesting, grading, data collection, and general assistance with all aspects of the program.
The schedule will be 20-40/hrs per week, Monday through Friday. Depending on the number of hours worked per week, the position will run for 5 to 10 weeks starting in mid-August. For example, we could hire one intern for 40 hours per week for 5 weeks or 20 hours per week for 10 weeks. Or we could hire two interns to each work 20 hours per week for 5 weeks. Pay will be $16/hour.
