Collapse ▲8/11/2021 – Update: Love social media! We got a bunch of applications within just a few days. Thanks.
8/7/2021 – One of our valued summer employees must suddenly leave our program for another opportunity and we have to replace him quickly! We are heading into our harvest season and we need another team member!! $17/hour! 30 to 40 hours per week! Apply through the NC State University Jobs site.
You would be working in our field trials on hemp, heirloom tomatoes (organic and conventional), hops, broccoli, truffles, and woodland botanicals. We are ready to start harvesting tomatoes, hops, ginseng, black cohosh, and goldenseal and could really use your help. Our studies are located on research stations in Mills River, Waynesville, and Salisbury with on-farm trials in Henderson, Buncombe, Chatham, and Davie counties. Our “home base” is the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research and Extension Center in Mills River right next to the Sierra Nevada Brewery and the Asheville airport.
This is a temporary position with NC State University that we want to fill as soon as possible and will run through October (maybe a little longer, but will promise through October). This is university field research on a wide variety of projects. So you will be helping to harvest research plots, weigh and count, take observations and photos, record data, do tomato taste tests, weed, and other tasks I can’t think of at the moment. It’s a fast-paced job and every day is different.
We are looking for someone who is really interested in plants, farming, and working outdoors. This is a great way to find out horticultural research is something you want to do. The person we hire must be reliable, able to take directions well, work independently but as part of a team, be able to make well-thought-out decisions on their own when necessary, and work in all kinds of conditions. This is our busiest season so this employee will not be able to take much (if any) time off; maybe a day or two if it works for the program, but not more than that. We work Monday through Friday, usually 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. We follow all the state and university COVID-19 precautions, which means we are again wearing masks indoors and when there are two or more people in a vehicle. If you are not vaccinated, weekly COVID-19 testing will be required soon.
We want to fill this position as quickly as possible. So if you are interested, or know someone who might be, please apply immediately using this NC State University Job link. Please share this opportunity widely, too. Thanks. Jeanine, Margaret, Luping, and Katie.
