What will be presented and discussed: Information will be provided on industrial hemp production, national and state regulations, applying for the NC industrial hemp pilot program, 2017 research findings, and insight into the growing NC industry for 2018. Ample time for Q&A and discussion will follow.

Who should attend: Current industrial hemp pilot program growers and licensees, prospective industrial hemp growers in western NC, representatives of the WNC industrial hemp industry, and NC industrial hemp research and extension personnel.

Purpose of the meeting: 2018 is year two for the Industrial Hemp Pilot Program in NC. This meeting was organized in response to increased interest from growers, local companies, national companies with interest in WNC, and other stakeholders in WNC.

Speakers to date include: Emily Febles, NC Industrial Hemp Program Manager; Jeanine Davis, Associate Professor and Extension Specialist, NCSU; Mountain Research Station Staff, 2017 Industrial Hemp Pilot Program growers and processors from WNC and beyond.

On May 20th, a Forest Farmer Field Day will be held inDuffield, VA. It will start with a tour of the Appalachian Harvest herb hub anda discussion on the economics of cultivating forest-grown medicinal herbs.After a catered lunch, attendees will tour forest farmer Ryan Huish’s farm,learning about his plans for cultivating forest herbs, along with plantidentification and information on site selection and more. The tour willinclude a mildly strenuous hike through diverse forest ecosystems.

The day before (May 19), the Forest Farming Grower-IndustryExpo and Training Event in Kingsport, TN will bring together herb companies,apothecaries, and herbal product makers with experienced and aspiring forest farmersfor a day of networking and learning. Panel discussions with forest farmers andbuyers will share valuable experiences and advice, and technical trainingsessions will be offered for all skill and experience levels. Topics willinclude herb cultivation and propagation techniques, plant conservation, certification,value-added production and more. Vendors are encouraged to attend, with alimited number of tables available at no charge.

Registration will open in February at www.regonline.com/asd-2018. Participants can choose to attend either or bothdays. These events are sponsored by Appalachian Sustainable Development andpartners in the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farmer Coalition; additional sponsorshipsare welcome. NC State University is a partner on this project.
